Cast as “reperformer” for Marina Abramović exhibition at Royal Academy of Arts. Throughout the exhibition, which ran from 23rd September 2023 – 1st January 2024, I performed three challenging and thought-provoking works – Imponderabilia (1977), Luminosity (1997) and Nude with Skeleton (2005).Schedule of Performance 23 September 2023 – 1 January 2024Luminosity19/10, 25/10, 8/11, 10/11, 17/11, 20/12, 29/12, 1/1/24Luminosity pushes the performance artist’s body to its limit. The performance artist sits suspended on a wall-mounted bicycle saddle, under bright lights, with their arms and legs extended. Describing the work, Abramović says: “When the body is exhausted you reach a point where the body doesn’t exist anymore. Your connection with a universal knowledge is so acute, there is a state of luminosity.”Nude with Skeleton1/10, 6/10, 12/10, 1/11, 29/11, 6/12, 16/12A performance artist lies beneath a skeleton, which rises and falls with their breath. The artwork was inspired by an exercise practiced by Tibetan Buddhist monks, which involves sleeping alongside the dead as a means of conquering our fear of dying.Imponderabilia19/9, 28/9, 13/10, 19/10, 25/10, 8/11, 10/11, 17/11, 22/11, 13/12, 20/12, 29/12, 1/1/24Two naked performance artists stand either side of a narrow doorway. The audience is invited to pass sideways between them. Abramović and Ulay performed the work to explore the idea of “the artist as a doorway to the museum”.
